I am missing my 6th graders already. Here are a few of the funny things they said the last few weeks of school.
Conversation #1Student: So, you are going to be the new vice principal?Me: Umm, no. I am going to be the new FACILITATOR.Student: Oh. What's that?Me: I will be taking over the position of Mrs. E.Student: Oh, well that means you are the new vice principal! Just promise to be nice.(First, what is that supposed to mean? Was I mean as a teacher and they are worried it is just going to carry over? Second, why do they care? They are big 7th graders now!)
Conversation #2The kids were coming to the carpet for a math lesson. I was trying to make them laugh before our very difficult math lesson. Who knew 6th grade math could be so hard? Anyway, on the screen was a picture of a man barbecuing...no one I know, mind you. I told the few kids that were at the carpet that it was a picture of my boyfriend. They looked at me in surprise. Here is the ensuing conversation:
Student: Mrs. Jeffs, you are married. You can't have a boyfriend. Me: No it really is my boyfriend. Student: You don't even go on dates!Me: Uhhh... (I am really thinking that this is not going the way I thought it would. This is actually really complicated.)
Student: Mrs. Jeffs, you teach us not to cheat!(Like I said, way too complicated for those little minds and maybe a little complicated for my own as well! I guess that was enough said. That conversation turned out much differently than I had anticipated!)
Conversation #3The last week of school one of my students, we will call him Sam, was presenting a reading response to the class. He had read a book about magic, and he wanted to share some of the magic with the class. Sam asked for a volunteer, so I raised my hand and joined him at the front of the room. It was a card trick, and everyone was totally enthralled with what he was doing. I had to hold some cards between 2 fingers, then he was going to knock the cards out of my hand, but the card I chose was supposed to stay in my fingers. It sounds like a great trick, but all did not go as planned. Remember, the kids are totally engaged in what he is doing. You could seriously hear a pin drop. He hit the cards and they
all fell to the floor.
Sam: D _ _ _ it! (We have a very strict policy at school when it comes to swearing.)
Sam crumbled to the floor.
Sam: Mrs. Jeffs, I am SO SORRY! I did not mean for that word to come out of my mouth. I never swear, I promise. It just slipped out. The class stared at him, in shock, and then quickly turned to see how I would respond.
I was laughing hysterically because I would never have expected that to come out of his mouth. The rest of the kids started laughing as well.
Me: Sam, don't worry about it, but if it happens again, it WILL be an action slip. (Insert a little sarcasm.)This turned out to be a great inside joke the rest of school. Sam handled it all very well.
I miss those kids already! We had a great year. Now on to new adventures!
